Job Description:  A scholarship of up to $5,000.00 is awarded annually by the Medical Library Association (MLA) to a student who shows excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health sciences librarianship. The scholarship is announced at the annual meeting of the association, where the recipient will also receive a one-year student membership in the Medical Library Association and free inclusive student registration at the association’s annual meeting.

• The applicant must be entering a Masters program at an ALA-accredited graduate library school or, at the time of the granting of the scholarship (February), have completed no more than one-half of the academic requirements of the graduate program.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Science for Indian Nationals

Job Description: Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an ensemble of 37 state-of-the art institutes, is amongst the foremost scientific and industrial research organizations. Over the years, this unique organization has helped India usher in a scientific milieu, creating and nurturing talent in a wide variety of S&T domains, spawned many organizations, many disciplines and most importantly has served as a nursery and training ground for most of India?s talented scientists and technologists. CSIR annually publishes over 3800 papers in science journals and holds over 3000 patents.
“CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme” has been instituted to identify promising young researchers with innovative ideas and provide them with training and research opportunities in niche areas of basic science, engineering, medicine and agriculture. The scheme aims at facilitating their transition from mentored to independent research career. CSIR intends to offer one hundred (100) such fellowships every year to promising fresh PhD holders for working in CSIR laboratories with state-of-art R&D facilities.
Eligibility: PhD degree holders within three years of award of PhD degree, or those who have submitted PhD theses. Applicants who are about to submit thesis are also eligible to apply, but their selection will be subject to the condition that they would have submitted thesis before the expiry of the validity of the award offer. Applicants should have research publications in high impact SCI journals.
Though CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is open to Indian nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), a certain number (up to 20%) of fellowships may be offered to foreign nationals.
Maximum Age Limit: 32 years, relaxable upto 5 years in case of SC/ST/OBC/Physically handicapped and women candidates.
Tenure: Two years and extendable for maximum one more year based on outstanding performance and recommendation from the Director of the CSIR lab where working.
Remuneration: CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Fellows will be paid a consolidated fellowship of Indian Rs. 35,000/- per month plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as admissible and a contingency grant of Rs. 3.0 lakh per annum. 25% of the contingency grant can be used for domestic and international travel including per diem expenses.

Doctoral Fellowship for USA and Canada Citizen, USA

Job Description: The purpose of the Medical Library Association (MLA) Doctoral Fellowship is to foster and encourage superior students to conduct doctoral work in health sciences librarianship or information science by providing support to individuals who have been admitted to candidacy. The award was established by Thomson ISI and is administered by the Medical Library Association. The award is granted bi-annually. The next scheduled date of distribution is 2010.
The MLA Doctoral Fellowship will support research or travel applicable to the completion of a doctoral project in an area of health science librarianship or information science.

ELIGIBILITY
• The applicant must be a graduate of an ALA-accredited school of library science.
• The candidate must be a candidate in a Ph.D. program with emphasis on biomedical and health-related information science. Preference will be given to applicants who have at least 75% of their course work completed and dissertation prospectus either approved or in the approval process.
• The candidate must be a citizen of or have permanent residence status in the United States or Canada.
• A past recipient of the MLA Doctoral Fellowship is ineligible.

Hyderabad : The state government may be compelled to approach the Supreme Court challenging the recent order of the AP High Court over the fee reimbursement issue.

The government has sought the opinion of its legal department and a final decision is expected to be taken on September 3.

The HC had last week issued orders that private college managements can collect fees from beneficiaries of the fee reimbursement scheme at the time of admission if the state government has not paid the amount to the colleges.

The order triggered protests with several Backward Class unions taking to the streets demanding that the government file a review petition either in the HC or approach the SC and try to vacate the HC order. Most of the student beneficiaries of the scheme are those who cannot afford to pay their own fees and the government is pledged to reimburse the fee amount to the colleges under the scheme, but has failed to do so.

The EMMEP  (Erasmus Mundus Minerals and Environmental Programme) is a 2 year M.Sc. program for students in Mining / Geotechnical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Recycling and related academic studies. There are three different specialisations; accommodating groups with 15 to 20 students each.

Joining the EMMEP program is an excellent opportunity to study abroad with a group of international students.

Outstanding individuals will be selected to work with nonprofit, public-interest organizations addressing peace and security issues. Required to work alongside a multidisciplinary team of academics comprising of Building modelling, energy and systems engineers, computer and social scientists and design and user interface technologists in partnership with O2, AlertMe and E.ON. The project will provide a vital understanding about how householders’ behaviours relate to their digital media and energy related practice. The project will develop user led energy reduction strategies and interventions that will be trialled in test homes.

The role will involve the day-to-day coordination of the project and have responsibility for delivering the energy modelling aspects of the work.

You must have a good Honours Degree in an energy/engineering related subject. Experience of buildings and their systems and exceptional communication skills is essential.  A relevant PhD, research in building energy and behaviour and knowledge of ICT and digital media would be an advantage.

The project, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), will investigate production of biodegradable core/shell capsules and gel microbeads, such as alginate, chitosan and poly(lactic acid) using flow focusing glass capillary microfluidic devices.

You will join Micro/Nano- Materials Engineering group whose research interest is centered on production of uniformly sized droplets and particles using membrane emulsification, microchannel emulsification and flow focusing glass capillary devices.

A good honours degree in Science or Engineering and experience in colloid and interface science, particle engineering, microencapsulation, polymer science or related disciplines and excellent communication and interpersonal skills is essential.  A PhD in drop microfluidics, emulsion technology, particle engineering or a similar area and experience in microfluidics and microengineering is desirable.

The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews and the Department of Physics at the University of Loughborough offer two post-doctoral fellowships in theoretical condensed matter physics. These positions form part of a collaboration between Dr J. Betouras at Loughborough, Dr C. A. Hooley and Dr A. G. Green at St Andrews to investigate instabilities and phase reconstruction near to quantum critical points.

One fellow will work largely with Dr Betouras in Loughborough and one with Dr Hooley and Dr Green in St Andrews. In both cases the fellow will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively with the local team of post-docs and graduate students and also to engage with the groups’ international collaborators. The latter will be supported by a generous travel budget.

You should have a PhD in theoretical physics and experience in field theories of condensed matter systems, along with evidence of your capacity to work as an independent researcher, for example through published papers. Experience of quantum critical systems is preferable, but not essential. The appointments will be made for 3 years starting around October 2010.

Job Description:  We are seeking to fill a new postdoctoral position to join the PLATO team working at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge which has a leading role in the development of the data processing and analysis system for this candidate ESA mission (for more details see http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/area/index.cfm?fareaid=104).

The PLATO team, located at the Institute of Astronomy, is responsible for developing the exoplanet processing system for all the photometric data produced by the Plato satellite. These data, together with the other data products of the mission, will enable the discovery of a large sample of confirmed exo-solar planet systems, with importantly, the ability to detect new earth like exo-solar planets.

The exo-solar planet analysis system pipeline will take as input baseline reduced photometric lightcurves from each of the ~40 PLATO onboard telescopes. The pipeline will include algorithms tuned to search for photometric transits, the signatures of orbiting planets.

At this stage, the PLATO mission is being assessed by ESA as one of three candidate missions, with two to be selected and the first then to launch in ~2018. The new post holder will work with the IoA Plato team and be responsible for an initial assessment of relevant techniques and processes of potential relevance in the development of the PLATO pipeline.

This post requires a completed (or soon to complete) doctoral degree in astronomy or a closely related science subject, with emphasis on data processing techniques.

Previous experience with relevant data processing methods would be an advantage.

The post will begin Oct 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter and at this stage is for a fixed term of 6 months. Possible extension depends on future funding, and the selection of PLATO at the next evaluation point in summer 2011.

Job Description: The world is facing a new health crisis: a rapidly increasing epidemic of chronic disease which is no longer restricted to high income countries. Today four out of five deaths from these conditions are occurring in low and middle income countries and at younger ages. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, diabetes and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) became the principal causes of death and disability in the UK during the twentieth century and continue to present a huge health burden. With changing demography, i.e. economic development, urbanisation, nutrition transition etc, there is also now a growing epidemic of these diseases in the Indian population.

To help address the causes of this epidemic, in November 2009 the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) jointly hosted a workshop in New Delhi. Experts from India and the UK reviewed the current disease burden in their respective countries in cardiovascular disease, diabetes (especially the contribution of obesity and early-life under-nutrition in the aetiology of disease) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (in particular the role of smoking and indoor pollution in its development) together with the strengths, weaknesses and unmet needs of the existing research landscape in these areas.

Objectives and Remit

The partnership between ICMR and MRC aims to combine the strengths of the Indian and UK chronic disease research communities. The guiding principles for the call will be:

Funding available

Each joint proposal must include requests for funding from both India-based and UK-based Principal Investigators (please see Eligibility section below for details of eligible institutions).

ICMR will provide funding to Indian researchers for research based in India. Approximately 5-10 million Indian Rupees (50 to 100 lakhs) will be available per project for its entire duration for the ICMR-funded portion of the costs. The funds are to be utilized in India only. Funding will be provided as per the usual ICMR Terms and Conditions.

MRC will provide funding to the UK applicants. Approximately £500,000 to £800,000 is available per project for the MRC-funded portion of the costs. Funding will be provided as per the usual MRC Terms and Conditions which permit UK institutions to spend MRC funding overseas when necessary.

The funders are expecting to support a small number (3-4) of multi-faceted joint India-UK programme proposals each with an expected duration of three to four years (the fourth year of funding will be subject to a successful review in the third year).

Job Description: The technical report India on HIV estimates 2006 reports that the total number of HIV infection (in millions) in India was 2.47 million, out of which 3.8% of the cases seen were below 15 years. The HIV prevalence for adult males and females together has been showing a declining trend during past five years. It was 0.36% in the year 2006 against 0.45% in 2002. HIV Prevalence 2006 in general population was 0.3%. The adult HIV prevalence during last five years remained almost stable at 0.4% varying between 0.45% in 2002 and 0.36% in 2006. PLHIV in all ages in 2006 was 2.47 million. Around 4% of them were children, 8% among the above-49 age groups and the remaining 88% in 15–49 age groups.

The ICMR is presently working on projects that includes anemia and nutrition, pharmacokinetics of anti-TB drugs when given along with ARV drugs ,nutritional status, Nevirapine levels when given in fixed dose combination, CD4 levels in Normal population of children, estimation of pediatric HIV in a high risk district and effect of Zinc on the recovery of CD4 counts .

Single /Multi centric project Proposals are invited to conduct in-depth research on various aspects of Pediatric HIV. This invitation for proposal is at the national level. This call for proposals is also to encourage the North east region to develop projects in Pediatric HIV. The researchers are advised while writing project proposal, if required, they may send the projects via email to the mentors identified for the different topics in pediatric HIV who will help the researchers to develop the projects.

Job Description: This announcement aims to foster development of a multi-faceted approach to the prevention and management of STIs and HIV including the role of other microbes (i.e. viruses, bacteria, etc.), behavioral and social interactions, epidemiological factors and co-morbidities associated with HIV transmission, including malignancies associated with other viral infections such as Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The importance of co-morbidities associated with HIV infection was highlighted in an Indo-US workshop: Clinical and Translational Research for Prevention and Treatment of Co-morbidities Associated with HIV Infection held on September 24–25, 2007 in New Delhi, India. This workshop was organized under the aegis of the Indo-US Joint Statement for Collaboration on Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV/AIDS. This funding opportunity would support the study of individual prevention/management strategies/interventions, as well as combination prevention/management strategies.

Applications may include, but are not limited to collaborations addressing the following aspects of STIs and HIV/AIDS prevention

* Identification of behavioral, social, epidemiological and/or infectious disease relationships that represent barriers to, and/or opportunities for novel prevention /management strategies,
* Conduct of focused microbiological, epidemiological, translational and behavioral and social science interventions and testing that addresses the implementation and/or understanding of the impact of a prevention/management strategy,
* Acquisition of knowledge that assists the operational aspects of developing and testing prevention/ intervention strategies for HIV/AIDS and/or interventions/treatments for associated co-morbidities,
* Preclinical research to establish clear evidence of physiologically-relevant anti-HIV activity,
* Research to develop approaches to measuring and improving acceptability of and adherence to prevention modalities.

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Biomedical Engineering (BME) group at DTU Electrical Engineering.
We conduct research in a number of interrelated subjects, ranging from biomolecular modeling, cellular communication to biomedical image- and signal-processing.
The project is an integral part of a cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary collaboration (funded by the Lundbeck Foundation) aimed at understanding the molecular basis of protein aggregation. This collaboration includes the Biocomplexity Laboratory at Niels Bohr Institute/University of Copenhagen headed by Prof. M. H. Jensen and the Department of Molecular Biology at iNano/Aalborg University headed by Prof. D. Otzen.

The project will focus on developing efficient computational and statistical methods to simulate and assess the process of protein aggregation. The project will greatly benefit from previous work and innovations of our group and collaborators within the field of statistical physics and machine learning. Our in-house software framework includes a range of new algorithms designed to overcome most of the short-comings of existing computational methodologies for single protein dynamics. Part of the project will be to generalise this framework to the inter-dynamics of multiple proteins. The close collaboration with the experimental groups will ensure an immediate feedback-pipeline to guide and validate the computational modeling.

The Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience is the first international neuroscience Graduate School was established at the University of Tübingen in 1999. In the future, three Schools will provide research oriented career tracks – leading to a master or doctoral degree – that provide an ideal preparation for a career in science and academia. The three graduate programs will complement one another at best and, thus, provide a markedly broad sprectrum of neuroscience
research and training opportunities in Tübingen. Teaching is entirely in English.

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, and additional partners. It is funded by the Federal State of Hesse through its Initiative for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The mission of the Centre is to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change at the organism level. The Project Area D “Laboratory centre” invites applications for the position of a PhD position “The  Genomics of Vertebrate Evolution”.

The successful applicant will use bioinformatical methods for data mining of genome and transcriptome sequences for studying vertebrate evolution. The aim is to identify candidate genes that have been under selection during major past environmental changes.

The candidate must hold a master or equivalent in bioinformatics, biology, genetics or a similar field of study. The applicant should have some background and strong interest in bioinformatics, population genetics and/or molecular phylogenetics. Programming (PERL, PYTHON or related) and some molecular biology skills are essential assets for the position. Good written and oral communication skills in English and the willingness to learn some German are required.

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50%).

The Food Security Center (FSC) is a university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innova-tive scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner research and education organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of sustainable food availability, food access, food use, and food utilization.

Scholarship description :

FSC awards 12 scholarships for PhD students from developing countries (see OECD DAC list) for a period of 36 months, beginning September 01, 2011 (with a month German language course). The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. The successful candidates will receive scholarships for participating in the PhD program “Global Food Security” to conduct their doctorates.

The scholarship is given for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The monthly grant is EUR 1,000 (for the time in Germany, during the field research there will be a different rate applicable). In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from Hohenheim. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend.

Selection criteria :

Besides the general selection criteria for the PhD program “Global Food Security” (see announcement of the PhD program “Global Food Security”), the following criteria have to be met additionally, if applying for an “Excellence scholarship”:

- Latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship;
- Indication for return to his/her home country and institute;
- Be a national of a developing country according to OECD DAC list.

Application:

The applicant has to submit the application documents for the PhD program “Global Food Security” and indicate in FSC’s application form, whether s/he applies for an “Excellence scholarship”. In addition to the general application, the applicant has to provide proof regarding the additional selection criteria mentioned above.

The European Initial Training Network EBRAMUS (Europe BRAin and MUSic) is offering a PhD position for up to three years at the Max Planck Institute for Human Brain and Cognitive Sciences (Leipzig, Germany) in the research group “Neurocognition of rhythm in communication”.

The successful candidate will work on the project “Facilitatory effects of temporal and rhythmic music cues in local and hierarchical syntactic processing” and conduct behavioural, ERP and fMRI research in healthy and patient (stroke, Parkinson) populations. The PhD project will investigate how and when temporal and rhythmic cues facilitate syntactic processes of various complexities during auditory language processing.

The candidate must have a Masters degree in experimental psychology, neuroscience, neurolinguistics, or neuropsychology; experience with EEG and/or fMRI techniques and an interest in combined language/music research; knowledge of research designs, statistical skills and computer programming skills (Presentation, MATLAB). Knowledge or proficiency of German is not required but a plus; candidates will be encouraged to learn German during the PhD programme. Please note the programme-specific eligibility criteria.*

The research will be conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, an internationally leading centre for cognitive and imaging neuroscience equipped with a 7.0 T MRI scanner, three 3.0 T MRI scanners, a 306 channels MEG system, a TMS system and several EEG suites. All facilities are supported by experienced IT and physics staff. The institute offers a lively, international and interdisciplinary research environment. PhD students have the opportunity to participate in the curriculum of the International Max Planck Research School.

The successful candidate will benefit from the expertise united in the EBRAMUS training network, including collaborations with network partners with relevant expertise in music and language research, implicit learning, as well as methodological expertise. EBRAMUS is a consortium of European research centres to study new perspectives for stimulating cognitive and sensory processes using music.

* At the time of appointment (1 November 2010), candidates need to be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, including the period of research training, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in Germany, irrespective whether or not a doctorate is envisaged. They may be of any nationality except for the German one. In the case of a candidate holding more than one nationality, he/she must not have resided in Germany during the previous 5 years. Hyderabad : The state government may be compelled to approach the Supreme Court challenging the recent order of the AP High Court over the fee reimbursement issue.

The government has sought the opinion of its legal department and a final decision is expected to be taken on September 3.

The HC had last week issued orders that private college managements can collect fees from beneficiaries of the fee reimbursement scheme at the time of admission if the state government has not paid the amount to the colleges.

The order triggered protests with several Backward Class unions taking to the streets demanding that the government file a review petition either in the HC or approach the SC and try to vacate the HC order. Most of the student beneficiaries of the scheme are those who cannot afford to pay their own fees and the government is pledged to reimburse the fee amount to the colleges under the scheme, but has failed to do so.

Hyderabad : Though it’s nearly four months since the Eamcet and Icet entrance examinations were conducted for admission into professional courses such as engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA, lakhs of students who passed the examinations are sitting idle thanks to delays in the admissions process.

As many as 1.6 lakh students have qualified in Icet, and 2.5 lakh in the Eamcet engineering and pharmacy streams this year.

The delayed admissions procedure has a knock-on effect for students admitted to the first year, with 70 per cent of them failing and the remaining 30 per cent passing with much difficulty, because they have just five months to complete the entire first year course.

With the government tightening the norms for those availing of the fee reimbursement scheme from this year by insisting that students pass all the first year exams if they want to qualify for the scheme in the second year, nearly 70 per cent of the students are in danger of losing the benefit this year.

O R D E R :
As per B.Tech. (R05) regulations, one of the academic requirement to award degree is that the student should secure 216 credits (out of 224 credits registered) with the compulsory subjects as listed below:
1. All the first year subjects
2. All the practical subjects
3. Industry oriented mini-project
4. Seminar
5. Project work.

Many representations from the students of R05 regulations are received, requesting the University not to consider the marks (not exceeding 0.4% of total marks) from the subjects, including first year subjects, in the calculation of 216 credits, required for the award of Degree. Also they represented that in spite of their hard work and effort made to pass the first year subjects, they are unable to pass one or two subjects which are compulsory subjects to become eligible for the award of degree.
In this connection, after careful consideration of the representations, mentioned above, the Vice-Chancellor is pleased to exempt all the first year subjects from the compulsory subjects, listed above. The clause No.1 of R05 regulations is hereby amended as follows:

A Student will be declared eligible for the award of the B.Tech. Degree if he fulfills the following academic regulations:

Pursued a course of study for not less than four academic years and not more than eight academic years registered for 224 credits and secured 216 credits with compulsory subjects as listed below:
1. All the practical subjects
2. Industry oriented mini-project
3. Seminar
4. Project work.

These orders shall come into force for the students appeared for the examinations during April/May -2010 onwards.
